Norfolk is gearing up for the arrival of a new waterfront casino, scheduled to open by late 2025. This highly anticipated development, known as "Project Mermaid," has recently reached a major milestone with the approval of a temporary casino as part of its long-term plans.
Norfolk City Council Approves Casino Project
The Norfolk City Council has approved a significant partnership between the Pamunkey Indian Tribe and Boyd Gaming. The agreement, which passed with a 7-1 vote, allows Boyd Gaming, operating through Golden Eagle Consulting II, LLC, to take the lead on the project.
This collaboration is expected to deliver substantial benefits to Norfolk. For instance, it will create new jobs, generate local tax revenue, and stimulate the economy. Council members have expressed optimism about the casino's potential to transform the city into a key gaming destination.
Details of the New Casino
Once completed, the casino will offer a wide array of features to attract visitors. These include:
- 1,500 slot machines and 50 table games
- A 200-room hotel
- Eight distinct dining and beverage venues
The project is projected to create more than 3,500 jobs and contribute approximately $230 million annually in wages and sales. With these amenities, the casino aims to fill a significant gap in the mid-Atlantic gaming market and establish itself as a premier entertainment destination.
Concerns Voiced Amidst Approval
Although the project received broad support from the council, it has not been without opposition. Councilwoman Andria McClellan, the lone dissenter, raised concerns regarding the strain the casino could place on public services. She expressed specific worries about potential impacts on local police, and emergency response teams, and the likelihood of an increase in gambling-related issues within the community.
Design Approval Delayed
Further development of the casino hinges on approval from the Norfolk Architectural Review Board, which has delayed its final vote until September 23. The board has requested revisions to the current design plans, and any additional delays could potentially impact the overall project timeline.
Project Background and Expected Completion
Voters initially approved the casino project in 2020, but it has experienced a series of delays since then. Now branded as "Project Mermaid," the temporary casino is expected to be operational by late 2025, with the full-scale resort contributing significantly to the revitalization of Norfolk's waterfront and providing a substantial boost to the local economy.
